Using the code ‘SS boroughs or Hospitals’
This code can be used to retrieve information that shows the individuals involved in the case according to the borough or the hospital they worked in, their role, actions and perspectives. Data can also be retrieved to show any differences in operation between each of the boroughs and the complexities involved in a child protection case when the service users move accommodation.
E.g. To understand the role, actions and perspectives of people working in Haringay
Do the following:
- If anything is still selected (text in the lists are highlighted) then click on the ‘Reset Form’ button at the bottom of the page.
- In the area where you can select the borough or the hospital where the witness worked: - Select 'SS Borough: Haringey' (click once with the mouse)
- Click on the 'Show Quotations' button at the bottom of the page
- A new page opens showing all the data you have retrieved. This can be cut and pasted into a word processing file for later use.
Teaching use
Students can read the text this produces to begin to understand the role of social services in child protection cases.
This type of retrieval is also important in this case study because each borough is part of the chronology of events, hence, the data can be placed on the time line between Victoria first coming to the attention of social services and her death. This may enable the researcher/student to highlight missed opportunities in the case.
This retrieval can be repeated with other boroughs or hospitals to produce several sets of data that can be used by students to compare and contrast for example SS Boroughs of Haringey and Ealing.
Refining the retrieval
You can combine this retrieval with job description to analyse what actions/opinions a specific professional group such as nurse or lay person such as clergy had in a specific borough.
E.g. To answer the question ‘what were the actions of all the nurses, SW, child protection advisor etc in Ealing?’
Do the following:
- If anything is still selected (text in the lists are highlighted) then click on the ‘Reset Form’ button at the bottom of the page.
- In the area where you can select the borough or the hospital where the witness worked: - Select 'SS Borough: Ealing (click once with the mouse)
- In the area where you can select the role or occupation of the witness: - Select 'Social Worker' (click once with the mouse)
- Also in the role or occupation of the witness: select 'Nurse' (hold down the Control key (Ctrl key) and click once with the mouse)
- Also in the role or occupation of the witness: select 'Child protection advisor' (hold down the Control key (Ctrl key) and click once with the mouse)
- If you wish, add other jobs or roles as well.
- Click on the 'Show Quotations' button at the bottom of the page
- A new page opens showing all the data you have retrieved. This can be cut and pasted into a word processing file for later use.
Teaching exercise to use this retrieval
Retrieve the data and analyse in groups it to explore the actions/opinions of different groups of people in a particular SS borough. Compare and contrast this to find out how communication works/breaks down in child protection in each SS borough.
Questions which student might address: ‘are there any missed opportunities created through the actions/opinions/communication between the different groups? Are there any differences in the groups in each of the SS boroughs?
